More Teeth than the Osmond Family: Kelpies — Adair's can be seen whenever he suffers from Glamour Failure. At least some of them have eight tentacles instead of legs. (In one named example they are purple.) Fair-Play Whodunnit: Nita concludes her mother is the one who sold her because only 3 people know about her powers — Nita herself, her, father, and her mother. An observant reader who's neither paralyzed with terror nor recovering from a strong sedative like she is could remind her that Fabricio saw her heal her arm during the struggle in her dissection room. Evil Virtues: Discussed — Henry banishes Kovit to Death Market because his "morals" got in the way of doing his job. When he sees the latter again in Toronto, he recounts how the zannie they hired to replace him was a monster with no empathy or restraint and claims the disastrous results taught him it's much better to work with someone with a moral Restraining Bolt.

I was on the edge of my throne and screenshotting the ever living crap out of the chapters and their epic monologues that would provide evidence to my friends SO THEY COULD READ IT AND FREAK OUT WITH ME. Total chakra alignment and whatnot. It took a special type of monster to dissect dead people and sell them without guilt. Nita was aware that morally speaking, she wasn’t on the good side of the scale. In fact, she was probably closer to the serial killer side of the scale. Sometimes thinking that bothered her a little. But then she stopped thinking about it and the uneasy feeling went away." Due to the Dead: Nita has to dispose of 2 bodies of people who tried to kill her, but she promises Kovit she won't dissect Henry's body.

A Pishtaco is a fat-eating unnatural. Liposuction promises precice body-shaping. Nita wishes at the beginning of "Not even Bones" to dissect one. She was mentioned to also be a zannie and always had a “visitor” in the basement of their house. She made sure young Kovit knew where his “food” came from, and Kovit loved her a lot. However, her personality rapidly deteriorated as Kovit grew up, and at one point, she tortured one of his friends. Shaken, he called INHUP, which swiftly captured and executed her. He expresses regret at indirectly killing her, though confesses she was no longer the person he used to know and care for. Throughout the book Nita helps Kovit to clear his name with the help of Fabricio who makes a reappearance before throwing them to the wolves. Nita’s Mother Monica plans to take control over Nita by killing Kovit, since Patchaya found out who had killed her friend. Monica hoped that while she confronted her brother, she’d kill him out of anger. But since she chose to walk away, Monica took it into her own hands and shot Kovit herself.

Nita is a morally complex character who struggles with who she is and what she is to become. She has murdered over a hundred people in self-defense, and lightly talks of killing others. Nita also has what she describes as an "almost dissecting fetish", as dissecting people calms and soothes her based on her upbringing. Even though others tell her that revenge will bring her nothing but trouble, Nita opts for torture instead of forgiveness.

One sat in a glass box at the market of Monsters in "Not even Bones". It skittered away when someone poked on the glass.

Henry seriously underestimates how attached Kovit is to Nita, admitting during their confrontation in Adair's store that he just doesn't get it. He truly couldn't fathom that Kovit would ever choose Nita over him, let alone how he'd react when he learned Henry planned to kill her... Henry clearly never once considered things would result the way they did when he threatened the girl he assumed was already Kovit's lover. They glow because of their bioluminescence, but this is not recognizable if they don´t shine at the moment.

She passed by the open door of a restaurant and saw a pair of American tourists snapping at a waiter. The woman was snarling something in English, and the waiter just stared at her, smile frozen on his face while shaking his head and trying to tell her, in a mix of broken English and Spanish, that he didn’t understand. Everyone Has Standards: Kovit has self-imposed rules he vows never to break and advises Nita to do the same to keep herself from truly becoming a monster. Super Window Jump: The stairs are too slow when running from 2 people shooting at you, so Nita escapes from Gold this way in Only Ashes Remain (she opens it first). Older Than They Look: Nita's mother uses her ability to make herself permanently look about 30. Nita's noticed that her mother has never aged like her father has. Fantastic Racism: The Dangerous Unnaturals List and status of unnaturals in this world is an obvious metaphor.

In the corner, a tub of formaldehyde caused everything to reek of death. The smell kept sneaking out of the room and making its way into Nita’s clothes. She found it strangely comforting. That was probably a bad sign. But, if Nita was being honest with herself, most of her habits and life choices were bad signs.

If I've ever felt more conflicted and indecisive of my feelings for a character, he takes the whole darn prize. Nita works on dissecting Reyes, and Kovit tells the 2 guards that he has something Reyes wants them to sell, telling them that it is Mirella's body. The guards call Reyes' phone to confirm, and Nita tries her best to imitate her. It works, and the guards come to take away the body parts. Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are: Gold does this when she calls Nita's bluff and shows up at the trap apartment looking for her. I guess if I were to critique this, I would say that the writing is a bit… fanfictiony? I don’t know, man, it’s a debut and it happens. Did I care? Nope. Nita couldn’t imagine it—people would never take action like that in the US markets. There, after the dealers bribed the shit out of the authorities, the locals just looked away and pretended nothing was happening. They didn’t want to see the darkness, refused to believe that their country could have such an ugly underbelly.
